“Why am I here?” – The mystery of human’s existence. Did we come here on planet earth to fulfil a specific mission? What is life all about? Why are we living in this exact time in this exact place with exactly these relationships right now?

I believe everyone has already questioned the meaning of life at least once. It is a human desire to dig deeper into the spiritual realm of our existence. This desire traces back to our spiritual origin. Some people may naturally sense a stronger connection to their inner calling, others less. First and foremost, we are probably all here to learn, evolve, and expand in some way. However, besides our own journey of personal growth, we are here to give something back to the world. This doesn’t mean that we are giving something away from us that we will lack. On the contrary, everything meaningful we give will multiply within our own life as well. Simply because we’re part of this world.

Have you ever asked yourself the following questions:

  • What’s the reason for being alive?
  • Do I have a mission to accomplish?
  • How can life become more meaningful?
  • How can I make a change in the lives of other’s?
  • Is life all about me?

I want to start with an article series on the big topic of “purpose”. Let’s dig deep into the big questions of our existence, of humanity, of life, of all the miracles that are happening every single moment around us. Enjoy! 🙂

~ Why am I here? ~

From the moment we are born into this world, we start perceiving it with our senses. We are experiencing the world outside from a small perspective inside a body. We are raised and taught to see everything outside as separate. We are raised into conditions which tell us how to live and what to do. There may be a range of possibilities that are offered, but at least in the western world, the system is pretty consistent. We are raised into a world where the mind is regarded as superior to the other entities of human beings. You were put into a structure and are supposed to obey the given rules. People are bogged down into the superficiality of our culture. The intuition and our innate desires are numbed down. There’s no need to question what is going on … well is there?

“The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
(Victor E. Frankl)

I believe that life is happening for a reason and that there is a purpose behind it. There is a process that is being undertaken by life itself: You just have to look out into nature. A life force keeps everything alive in a specific order. We as human beings are part of this process. We create the experience we are living. Life exists with all different forms: the beautiful sunrise, the birth of a child, humanity in its vast variety, art, science, technology, an idea that somebody is just about to receive, the feeling of love, movement, the power of awareness. Within this variety, you can probably relate to one aspect or another; you feel attracted by it; you resonate with something, don’t you? – This resonance tells you more about yourself. Within this relation, you are about to discover a part of yourself that dims inside, becomes awakened, and wants to be expressed – by you. It gives you an inkling about who you are and what you are here for … In every given moment, you may discover a new aspect of yourself as the world mirrors it back to you. Following this inspiration will give you a reason to strive for. Suddenly, life makes sense to you and you will be able to bring sense to the world. Listen; and follow this internal drive.

Life is a miracle and so are you.
Be this miracle.

So, why am I here? – Every human being is born into this world for a reason. We are gifted to experience life itself through this fascinating sensory perception. We are gifted with a beautiful body, a helpful mind, and our unique gift that resides deep within. A gift that the world utterly needs and wants most from you. You are the only person who is able to express and share this gift with the world. There are people out there who desperately wait for someone like you, expressing your truth in your unique way. Purpose is the bridge between your own heart and the heartaches of the world. The world needs your truth.

This is the reason you are here right now, reading these lines …

~Ego vs. Higher Self ~

People are physically sensing and therefore perceiving their reality from a subjective perspective. Each of us lives in his own body and own mind, perceiving oneself as separate from everyone and everything else. This separation is called the “ego”. It has its necessity here on earth, without an egoic perspective we wouldn’t be able to express our individuality. However, humanity has come to the point where the ego prevails our thoughts, decisions, behaviours, ultimately our whole being. It is meant to be a servant, supporting us in the execution of our non-visible visions coming from the heart; but humanity lost this cordial connection and let the ego take place in the driver’s seat. The ego has no interest in higher consciousness, it sees and perceives everything disconnected from itself. It wants, takes, acquires, but has no interest in giving.

The Higher Self – your essence – knows its connection to everything. It creates, shares, cooperates and wants to be of service. If we experience the state of Higher Self, it is all about being of service, giving love, radiating light, treating everyone and everything with a deep sense of respect. This is when you’re connected to the highest consciousness and care all about the greatest good. On a fundamental level, the Highest Self is concerned about the whole, simply because it is one with the whole.

Only in an authentic state you can truly serve humanity as well as yourself. Your authentic Self is fully in alignment with your soul’s interest. If you put on a mask and hide your truth, you just deceive everybody and hurt yourself which is no base of relationship at all. That’s an ego-based act: disconnection, separation, seeking for security.

So, is there a healthy and “useful” link between the ego and the Highest Self?

~ The art of serving ~

There is a statement I came across in the wonderful book “Conversations with God” which touched me deeply. It says:

“Your life is not about you.
Your life is about everyone else whose life you touch
and the way you touch it.”
(Conversations with God – N.D. Walsch)

If a person stays self-centred and focused only on himself, he won’t be able to find happiness and true fulfilment. Yes. You should have your goals, your objectives, your unique interests, nobody wants you to give them up. You are even supposed to work and move towards these goals, go in the direction of your passion, of what moves you deeply. The main difference is the purpose of these actions: You are not supposed to do and achieve these things for ego-based reasons, like chasing money, reputation, gathering endlessly, etc. “If you do these things to enrich the life’s of everyone whose life you touch, watch the world fall in on you with wonder, joy, and celebration” (Walsch, 2005).

What this ultimately means, is that the ego has its role in the process of acting and doing everything you want to fulfil in life. However, addressing “everyone else whose life you touch” includes yourself as well. It is about the “bigger” you, the Universal You, the Higher Self who is connected to everyone else. Thus, it doesn’t mean you should forget about yourself and neglect self-care, etc.; but everything you do is not for the sake of an egoic gratification, it rather is for the sake of the “extended you”. Your perception is the access point in the physical world to connect with everyone else. It is essential to care for and love yourself because when you do those things for you, you will be able to do it for others as well. However, staying stuck with yourself, being isolated and follow only self-care rituals won’t enable you to experience greater happiness. It won’t fulfil you unless you start to share, to serve, to give and to add value to people’s life. Everything you give comes back a thousand times because you will vibrate on the frequency of abundance.

“Anything that is of value in life only multiplies when it is given.”
(Deepak Chopra)

If you lack something in your own life, there is one simple recipe to get it (back) again: Bring it into the life of others.

~ Your unique gift ~

So, we can conclude that whatever you want to do or achieve is not supposed to arise from an egoic level, but in a sense of the greater good. When it comes to your unique meaning of life, we face the beauty of our individuality. As I said before: The world has so many different things to offer, but there are just very specific aspects we do resonate with. There is not one book, one teacher, one diet, one exercise technique, one path or way of living for everyone. But there is one for each of us at a given time in life. Each of us is gifted with some kind of talent, interest, and desire. Each of us has a unique dream of how to live life fully. None is better or worse than the other. The world needs all of them. You can choose the meaning you want to give your life. Your unique meaning is already inside of you, it is your own gift you have to offer and add value to people’s life.

“The meaning of life is to find your gift.
The purpose of life is to give it away.”

You may ask yourself “But how can I find my gift, my meaning, my purpose”?

In my upcoming articles on this series (“Purpose”) I’ll address:

  • the Key Questions on “How to find your purpose”,
  • what it means that “Your mess will become your message”,
  • the question, if there is one specific purpose for everyone,
  • and much more.

Stay tuned. If you can relate to my content, feel free to share it with your beloved ones; leave me a comment and tell me about your experiences and opinion on this topic.

Sending you a big hug, my friends!

Lots of love & Namasté,

yours Isabel!
